Colombia’s Strategic Environment: A Pending Update in the Decade 2012-2021

In 2012 the global geopolitical pivot of Asia-Pacific was reconsidered, meanwhile a peace process began in Colombia. Both processes required States to update their strategic environment and define their associated military capabilities. Thus, the objective of the article was to determine the role of Colombia in terms of that environment. To this effect, from Samuel Cohen, for whom the geopolitical context is dominated by six great powers (United States-U.S., China, the European Union, Russia, Japan and India), only the projection of military power of those and of Brazil as a regional power was analyzed. It is evident that without apparent traditional threats from this context, hybrid threats to Colombia have intensified; especially, because of its proximity to eleven countries where divergent geopolitics and dynamics of transnational insecurity converge. Colombia's projection should be one of leadership in this subregion, thus contributing to the balance of the global multipolar system.
